When the foam has gone crumbly or for whatever other reason the old Latex weapon is beyond repair or use, then its time to salvage what you can, although about the only thing you can salvage are the fibreglass cores.
Fibreglass cores cost £ 5 to £ 20 depending on length and thickness so well worth the bit of effort it takes to retrieve them.
Simple pull as much foam off as you can with your fingers, in most cases this will be all but the last layer glued to the core.
If really difficult get it started by cutting into the foam with a utility knife
The last part is taken off using a utility knife held almost at right angles to the core, like if you were saving with a cutthroat razor.
Wear gloves at this stage since you don't want nasty fibreglass splinters and also a dust mask since you will get fibreglass dust which you also don't want to breathe in.
Then just scrape up and down until the core is clear of all old glue and foam.
Do not use the knife with the blade at an angle where it could cut into the core, you will damage it and leave nasty pieces of fibreglass.
It takes about 15 minutes to clear a sword length core start to finish.
Once complete bend the core a bit in all directions to ensure it's still in good condition, i.e. the fibreglass doesn't come apart when you bend it.
There you are one clear core to use as a base for a new weapon
